Firefox 4, 5, 6 and 7 to be released before the end of 2011

Firefox's official roadmap has been updated, and boy are there some interesting changes afoot. Most notably, Firefox 7 will ship in 2011. The second biggy, and the main focus of Firefox development in 2011, is to make sure there is no more than 50ms between any user interaction and feedback from the browser.

As far as feature sets go, this is what the roadmap looks like: Firefox 5 will absorb the Account Manager and F1 Simple Sharing add-ons to become built-in features. It looks like Windows 7 64-bit will be officially supported with FF5, too.

Firefox 6 will have a focus on the Web applications framework, JavaScript optimizations, and support for OS X 10.7. For Web applications, some missing pieces of CSS3 and HTML5 will be added to Gecko, the rendering engine.

Firefox 7's feature list is less clear. Electrolysis (splitting everything into separate processes) and changes to XBL support are mentioned, but nothing certain.

Overall, there's a big emphasis on responsiveness and "shining the primary UI until it gleams."

It'll definitely be interesting to see how Mozilla transitions to a new release cycle -- and it'll definitely mean a lot more Firefox-related news, too!

Update: some conscientious eyes have noticed that the roadmap says 'Draft' at the top, so this could all change...

Hotmail now offers disposable email via aliases

Though it's still playing catch-up in terms of geek cred, Hotmail has grown into a much more modern, powerful webmail app in the past year. The latest update by Microsoft introduces support for email aliases -- a handy option which Gmail users have enjoyed for quite a long time which are like the privacy-protecting disposable email accounts we've told you about before.

Using an alias is handy for a couple of reasons. For one, an alias allows you to easily filter incoming mail. Register as a commenter on our site as youralias@hotmail.com, configure a rule in Hotmail to handle messages sent to that address, and you're done. Want to register for a contest but don't want to be bothered after the deadline passes? Just turn off your alias, and mail sent to that alias will no longer reach your inbox. Unlike Gmail's yourname+email@gmail.com aliases, these are "real" email addresses -- so they'll work anywhere an address should (some sites don't like the + in normal aliases).

Aliases can be an incredibly useful feature, so it's well worth your time to learn a bit more about them. Head on over to the Inside Windows Live blog to read the Hotmail team's take.

uTorrent 3 hands on: zero-config Web control, streaming, and one-click file sharing

uTorrent LogouTorrent 3 beta [download link], which has been publicly available since the end of 2010, is now stable enough and juicy enough for you to sink your teeth into.

As far as actual torrenting goes, uTorrent 3 is very similar to its precursor, but it's now very apparent that this new version is about extending the BitTorrent protocol -- and the company -- into another space entirely.

The main new feature, which we alluded to when we reviewed uTorrent Remote for Android last week, is integration with uTorrent Web. uTorrent Web is a completely new offering from BitTorrent (the company) that offers secure and private zero-config control of your torrents via a Web control panel.

There's more, though! Video and music streaming makes its return, and 'Pulse' torrent ratings are making their debut. Finally, there's a new way to share files with your friends with the magic of TinyURL, BitTorrent, and 'Web Seeds.' Read on for the full hands-on treatment.

6 Survival Tips for Nokia and Microsoft

Nokia on Friday announced it was putting the decade-old Symbian operating system to rest, and future Nokia phones will ship with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 software. The decision will be famously remembered as the time Nokia jumped off what its CEO called a “burning platform” to reverse the company’s downward spiral in the phone market. Nokia’s Top [...]

CorelDRAW video tutorial: Add detail to any image using the Mesh Fill tool

coreldraw
This is the third of four weekly CorelDRAW demos/tutorials. The previous two were about making a Polaroid-like image and vectorizing a simple logo.

This week's video is more of a simple demo than a tutorial: One of CorelDRAW's coolest features is the Mesh Fill. Those of you familiar with Adobe Illustrator will recognize the tool instantly: It allows you to add a great level of detail to otherwise simple vector objects. You can take a simple oval and make it into a photorealistic water droplet using nothing but the Mesh Fill tool.

This tool requires a great deal of practice to master - it's not a simple technique. Rather than attempt a complete drawing, I elected to simply show what it can do. If you've never used a vector drawing application before, this video will give you a good idea of what can be done using the Mesh Fill tool. Take the jump to watch the video.
